When I think of pumpkins, I am reminded of the nights drawing in and the rich wintry flavours that are starting to appear on our tables.

Roasted pumpkin always has a wonderful colour and sweet nutty flavours that need a wine of equal body and richness, this is a time when I am naturally drawn to classic oaky chardonnay from the likes of Meursault, Napa Valley and Mendoza in Argentina.

Deep bodied and often golden in colour, these oaked wines can have a creamy texture that mingles beautifully with sweet buttery pumpkin flavours.

However if oaky wines are not to your taste then look to some of the more substantial grapes that can provide this richness without the need for heavy handed oaking, wines made from Viognier, like Condrieu from the Rhone Valley, or Rousanne and Marsanne combinations. These are wines that pack a punch, with sometimes a slightly oily texture coming from the fact that they prefer a warm, sunny climate to reach optimum ripeness.

On the nose they can provide a heady perfume of peach and apricot, aromatic spices and creamy butter, while the palate is rich, warming and powerpacked with exoticism.

So what could be better than being sat curled up in front of the fire in your favourite armchair, enjoying a steaming bowl of this warming soup and glass of matching wine while the world outside shivers its way into winter.

Go on, try it!
