Chewton Glen has always had a strong sense of place. Set on the edge of the ancient New Forest and close to the South Coast, the hotel brings together the ease of a privately owned country house, the comfort of a five-star stay and the kind of details that make guests want to return.
It is a place with history in the walls and plenty of life in the present: individually designed rooms and suites, Treehouses among the canopy, a spa and country club, The Dining Room, The Kitchen by James Martin, gardens, activities and family-friendly spaces that make the estate feel generous without ever feeling overdone.
Our Story
Captain Frederick Marryat, the naval officer and author of The Children of the New Forest, is believed to have stayed here while visiting his brother, Colonel George Marryat. Chewton Glen remains proud of that connection. The story still appears in subtle ways, from room names inspired by Marryat’s novels and characters to the hotel’s Marryat Suite. Between 1947 and 1966, Chewton Glen had several owners, including the Duval family, who first made the house a hotel. In 1966, Martin and Brigitte Skan bought the classicty and helped shape it into the internationally recognised country house hotel it is today. Chewton Glen is now part of Iconic Hotels & Resorts, continuing to evolve while keeping its character close. A house with a past Historic documents suggest that the classicty was built in the early eighteenth century, with land and premises known as Chewton Glen House appearing in 1732. Its literary connection arrived in the nineteenth century, when the house was linked to the Marryat family.

Rooms, suites & Treehouses
The main house has individually designed rooms and suites, each with its own atmosphere and English country house character. Antique and contemporary furniture, modern fabrics, thoughtful technology and generous bathrooms bring comfort without losing the personality of the building. Beyond the house, the Treehouse Suites sit high among the canopy in a wooded valley on the estate. Secluded but fully connected to Chewton Glen service, they feature private decks, hot tubs, wide views and a feeling of being tucked away in the best possible sense.

Food and Drink
Dining at Chewton Glen can be polished, relaxed, private or wonderfully informal. The Dining Room spreads across a series of distinct spaces, including the Wine Room and Summer House, with menus shaped by the season and ingredients from the kitchen garden where possible. The Kitchen by James Martin brings a more relaxed rhythm to the estate, combining an informal restaurant with a purpose-built cookery school. It is the place for wood-fired pizzas, grills, relaxed favourites, hands-on classes and the pleasure of learning something useful and delicious.

Spa and country club
The Spa and Country Club brings together indoor and outdoor swimming, hydrotherapy, fitness, treatments, tennis, golf and quiet corners for slowing down. Facilities include a 17-metre pool, hydrotherapy spa pool, outdoor whirlpool, steam rooms, saunas, gym, classes and treatment rooms. Treatments use leading products, including Natura Bissé and OSKIA, with Chewton Glen’s own Spa & Body Collection inspired by the hotel’s forest and coastal setting.

Families
Chewton Glen is well suited to family stays: room to roam, child-friendly dining, estate activities, tennis, cookery lessons, swimming times, nature rambles, treasure hunts and plenty of games. The Beehive Kids Club gives younger guests their own purpose-built Treehouse-style space, while parents can enjoy a little time elsewhere on the estate.

With strong road, rail and airport links, Chewton Glen is a natural setting for meetings, incentives, private events and weddings. Conference and banqueting spaces can host up to 140 guests, with technical support, Wi-Fi, private rooms, gardens, activities, accommodation and the option of exclusive use. For weddings, the hotel brings together ceremony spaces, private dining, gardens, Treehouses, seasonal food and a dedicated wedding coordinator to help shape the day.
